Day 7 (14 June 2018) Leh to Nubra Valley via Khardung La Rd (160 KM)
Today we have to visit "Nubra valley" so we were planning to leave early in the morning last night. We also have made decision last night that we are not going to carry large baggage's with us on this route as enroute to "Nubra valley" we will cross the world's highest motorable road "Khardung La" pass with height of (5359 M). There roads are not is very good condition and we also have concern about out car. It has small engine we are not sure how will it behave on that high roads as of low O2 it also effect vehicle performance. So we took only the required cloths and things with us and the rest we left at hotel as we will return after two days to Leh will hire the same hotel. Along with Nubra valley we will also going to visit "Diskit" and "Hunder City".
Nubra is a high altitude cold desert with rare precipitation and scant vegetation except along river beds. The villages are irrigated and fertile, producing wheat, barley, peas, mustard and a variety of fruits and nuts, including blood apples, walnuts, apricots and even a few almond trees. Most of the Nubra Valley is inhabited by Nubra dialect or Nubra Skat speakers. The majority are Buddhists. In the western or lowest altitude end of Nubra Valley near the Line of Control i.e. the Indo-Pak border, along the Shyok River, the inhabitants are Balti of Gilgit-Baltistan, who speak Balti, and are Shia and Sufia Nurbakhshia Muslims. The Shyok River meets the Nubra or Siachan River to form a large valley that separates the Ladakh and Karakoram Ranges. The Shyok river is a tributary of the Indus river. The average altitude of the valley is about 10,000 ft. i.e. 3048 metres above the sea level. The common way to access this valley is to travel over the Khardung La pass from Leh town.
Worlds Highest Coafeteria at Khardung La Pass
One more thing, local taxi union have setup one check post enroute to Khardunga la pass. It is of 6 km approx from Leh. They have setup it to check that the vehicle you carrying is belongs to you or you have rent from outside the Leh or J&K if so I think they will not allow you to cross that. You have to rent the car from Leh then. If the car belongs to any of your family member and it is not on your name that they may ask you to prove your relation with him or her. Kindly carry some kind of identification document that can prove your relation with the owner. So lets go.......................
